Our Gospel reading, this morning, is called the great commission. Matthew 28:16-20 is where the Disciples have followed instructions, gone to Galilee, and met Jesus on the mountain. Matthew even tells us, in verse 17, "but some doubted." Now Jesus is giving instructions for what the Disciples are to do -- "go to all nations....... make disciples..... teach......" Jesus also reminds them "I am with you always, even to the end of the age." (v. 20 NRSV) And the Disciples follow instructions! They go, they make disciples and baptize, AND they teach about what they have seen -- even though "some doubted" - questioned what they were seeing and hearing.
Think about it for a minute, though. They had a pretty big "world" right there. Matthew doesn't give us an exact time frame, like the other Gospels, but we know Jerusalem had a pretty large number of visitors from quite a few 'nations.' Even before the Disciples went "out" on the various trips we have in the New Testament -- they could 'go, make and teach' right there in Jerusalem. And they did!! Small world isn't it!!?
We can do that too. We can talk to the people we know, and see regularly, and even to family. We can help them to see, and know, God's love. We can teach them about following where God is leading. We can help them to become Disciples following the RISEN Lord. Like we say, in Emmaus, we can start the change with ourselves, then with our families, then with our friends and soon we have "changed our world."
Who is God calling you to "go to"? Are they right here? Are you, like some of the Disciples, a little fearful and doubting? Jesus reminds us ALL -- "I AM WITH YOU." Something to think about as we continue to celebrate He IS risen...... He IS RISEN - indeed!!
