Then we come to today's readings. Joshua 24:15b "but as for me and my house we will serve the Lord." And in Matthew 4:10 where Jesus is responding to Satan "for the Scriptures say, 'You must worship the LORD your God and serve only him.'" (New Living Translation) Joshua has just reminded the Hebrew people what all God has done for them (like Moses last week), about the various gods each has encountered, and the need to follow God. Jesus has just been tempted, by Satan, with food and "all the kingdoms of the world." In both cases the "choice" is to follow God!
The question is - do we make the same choice? Jesus tells us, in Matthew 22, the greatest commandment is to "love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind." (37) He then reminds us to "love our neighbor as yourself." (40) We say we are doing these things - after all we are in worship (at least sometimes), we give to the food shelf (at least during March Food Drive) and we try to follow where God leads (until we 'hit the wall' or run into the 'giant').
We are given choices - a lot of choices! - from which meat to buy to which candidate we actually think will do what they say. We are given choices of how to spend our time, what schedule to keep and where we want to spend our time. We are "hit" with so many choices, and decisions, that show us the 'gods' the world would like us to follow. We need to decide -- will we, like Joshua, say "as for me and my house we will follow the Lord"? Can we follow/do, as Jesus asks, "worship the LORD your God and serve only him"? (emphasis mine) Or do we make the choice to listen to all the gods coming at us from all the different directions? Choices....... What choice do we make?
