There is another part to also be thinking about. Our Gospel reading, this morning, is John 18 where Peter is denying Christ. I would like to start there then go to the idea of eating from "Surprise the World." I am very active in Emmaus, as a lot of you already know, at our "gatherings" (where we are eating!) one of the things we ask each other is "when have you denied Christ?" Have you thought about that? When have you denied Christ -- this week? during Lent? Recently? This year?
The idea that comes to mind, for me, is when I've known God is calling me to do something and I haven't done it. As easy as returning a phone call, as hard as continuing with the Lenten Discipline - but I have gone with the path of 'least resistance' instead of doing what God has asked/laid on my heart to do. NOT doing what God has asked, or doing it "later" is still denying Christ.
Which brings us to "eating"............ This week's reading in "Surprise the World" is encouraging us to be eating with three (3) people -- like the blessings last week. I realize for those of us in rural areas eating with three different people could be difficult but it IS still doable. Meeting someone for coffee, inviting a group (of three?) to come eat at your house, several going out after worship -- different ways God is calling each of us to be sharing the "blessings" God has given us. Inviting a person who is NOT part of the church (or one you haven't seen IN church in a while) could be fun and encouraging for the invited person.
Interesting ideas to be thinking about. What is God calling you to be doing? Who is God asking you to eat with this week? I know busy schedules. I understand "rural" difficulties. I think it just increases the challenge to not deny Christ. I encourage you try it -- you MIGHT like it!
