Our Scripture readings, this morning, are Jeremiah 17 and Matthew 13. Jeremiah is reminding the people the "blessed" are the "ones who trust in the Lord. They will be like a tree planted by the water...." (vs. 7 & 8) Jesus is telling parables to "fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden since the creation of the world." (vs. 35) He tells of weeds filling the field and of a mustard seed "taking over" the garden. The interesting thing is mustard seeds, like some other 'weeds,' can be a good thing.
So.... back to my thought....... Technology, and a lot of other things the 'world" presents, can be a good thing - very useful. It can also take over our lives - like a mustard seed that "becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches." (vs. 32) Things invading our heart, field(?), can keep us so busy we forget to spend the time soaking up God's strength - "like a tree planted by the water."
Yes, technology can be a good thing. Yes, we can be reaching out, and connecting, with technology. Yes, we can even continue to show God's Love with technology. Yes, we also need to guard our hearts, protect our time and continue to learn, grow and strengthen our relationship with God, from the things the world insists on. We need to be the strong tree, soaking up God's strength, so others see, and know, God through the branches we reach out with.
What about you? Is your heart growing stronger in your relationship with God? Is your heart being "overgrown" by the weeds the world is sending at you?
