What I am referring to, this morning, is our Gospel reading from last night. Yes, I am involved in the spring Women’s Emmaus Walk. If you are not familiar with Emmaus please check it out. I have been active, with Emmaus, for over 20 years now. I have also been blessed to be on a Via De Christo. Cursillo and Tres Dias are also based on Luke 24 and two Disciples walking to Emmaus. Jesus walks with them but at first they don’t recognize Him. We also walk with Him but don’t recognize His presence with us. These weekends give wonderful opportunities to not only recognize His presence but to learn, grow and strengthen our relationship with God.
Okay……. So the Gospel reading also refers to the two Disciples saying to each other “were not our hearts burning (or on fire depending on the translation) while He spoke to us” (verse 32 New English Translation). Our “hearts burning” when we could feel God’s presence with us. When have you, or do you, experience this? When are you “in” God’s presence, feeling God near you? And, even more important, when do you share the experience with others? Do you tell anyone how God has blessed you?
One of the questions, we ask each other, in Emmaus is “when have you felt closest to Christ?” I would also ask when, in worship, have you felt the presence of Christ? Are you praying for either? For both -- worship and private? Have you shared the experience? Something to think about.
