Our reading, this morning, is Philippians 1 where Paul is greeting “all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philipi” then he says “with the bishops and deacons.” (Verse 1) He is speaking to ALL of the people in the community, working together to do the mission God has given them. He points out, in verse 6, “he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion.” He also tells them he is thankful for each, and all, of them - praying for them daily.
It kind of makes you wonder - what is your definition of “saints”? One translation (New Living Translation) says “all of God’s holy people in Christ Jesus.” (Verse 1) Is it your definition of “saint” -- one of God’s people in Christ Jesus? Is it the person who is always the first one at worship service and the last one to leave? Is it the person in the community who is always helping others?
What is the “good work” God began in you? Are you seeing God bring it to completion? Are you working in, and through, community to stay strong in your relationship with God through Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit?
We are, finally (please, God!!), to spring “up north.” Most, if not all, of the lakes have “ice out” - for which we are thankful. It raises some interesting questions to add to those above….. Where is your community support? Who IS the “saint” you think of? Where are you giving support? Things to be thinking about!
